Chicago, IL Moving FAQ

Here's what Chicago neighbors ask most while they're picking a mover. Don't see yours? Call (888) 278-9005 and Danny or Bridget will walk you through it.

Archer's Moving Services crew loading boxes into the moving truck in Chicago

Run by the owner, not a front desk

Dial the office and it’s Danny picking up, or a mover who actually rides the trucks — never a scripted call center. Point out the turning greystone stairs, the alley-only load, or the block where nothing parks legally, and the whole day is mapped before your date lands.

Priced on paper before we lift a box

We walk the place room by room to build your number, and the wardrobe cartons, moving pads, dollies and shrink-wrap are already inside it — so nothing gets tacked on once the crew is standing at the curb.

Full pack or just the fragile stuff

Hand us the whole kitchen for dish barrels, let wardrobe cartons carry your closet off the rod on their hangers, or point out the mirrors, flat-screens and glass tabletops we crate to fit for the ride across town.

The same faces from door to door

Whoever measures your home at the estimate is the crew chief driving the truck and doing the final empty-house walk with you — a Pilsen two-flat, an Oak Park bungalow or a Streeterville tower on the freight elevator, your things never change hands.

The quick answers

  • Hourly rates: $149 for two movers and a truck, $209 for three, one-hour minimum
  • Free $0.60-per-pound coverage on every load; full-value protection whenever you want it
  • We cover the city and all of Chicagoland, and we take moves out of state

The rest of the common questions are below — pricing, licensing, winter, stairs, high-rises, parking and how your things are covered.

Does Archer's own crew handle my move, or does it get passed to another company?
Yes — Archer's Moving Services is a fully licensed and insured, owner-run moving company based in Chicago, IL; we run our own trucks and uniformed crews. Danny and his movers do the loading and the driving on every job themselves. Nothing gets farmed out to a stranger's truck, and we're no broker or lead-seller.
Will you move us in the middle of a Chicago winter, snow and road salt and all?
We work right through the winter. The crew lays floor runners and pads at both doors so salt, slush and melt never reach your floors, wraps furniture before it goes out in the cold, and shovels a path when the walk is iced. We watch the forecast and only push a date if the roads turn genuinely unsafe.
We're on a third-floor walk-up in a greystone with a tight, turning staircase — can you carry it?
That's everyday work for us. Deon's crew measures the tight turns, hand-carries what won't clear the landings, and stands furniture on end where the staircase pinches. Third-floor walk-ups in Lakeview, Logan Square and Wicker Park are some of our steadiest jobs.
Our downtown high-rise needs a freight-elevator reservation and a certificate of insurance — do you handle that?
Every week. Bridget books your freight-elevator window with building management and sends the certificate of insurance the property manager requires, well ahead of move day. Jamal runs our Loop and Streeterville high-rise jobs, so the padded elevator and loading dock are lined up before we pull up.
There's no driveway on our block — how do you deal with street parking, permits and the alley?
We know the drill. Where the city wants a moving permit or 'No Parking' signs to hold curb space, we help you arrange it ahead of time; where the only way in is the alley and back porch, we work it. On tight one-way blocks we stage the truck for the shortest safe carry.
Our condo association only allows moves on certain days and within set hours — can you work within that?
Yes. Plenty of buildings limit moves to weekdays or a fixed window and require the elevator be padded and reserved. Tell us your association's rules and we'll schedule the crew to land inside that window, paperwork filed and elevator booked.
What are your hourly and flat rates around Chicago?
For a local job we run the hourly clock: $149 gets you two movers with the truck, $209 puts a third on the crew, and a one-hour minimum applies. Prefer a flat figure? A studio lands around $400 to $640 and a two-bedroom around $720 to $1,180. Wardrobe boxes, moving pads, dollies and shrink-wrap come with every job at no extra charge.
If something gets damaged, how are my belongings covered?
Every load travels with free released-value coverage set at $0.60 a pound. Want everything protected at its full replacement worth? Layer on full-value protection and your cargo is insured as high as $1,000,000 on a single shipment. For a move that crosses state lines, the window to submit a claim runs nine months from the delivery date.
From the first carton loaded to the last one carried in, one Chicago crew owns your whole move

How Your Move Day Unfolds

  1. 1

A written estimate the same day

On our end: Tell us how many rooms, whether it’s a walk-up or a ground-floor carry-out, and the parking on your block — and a figure in writing is usually in your inbox before we close up for the night.

Where you help: Have your two dates ready, the day you’re out and the day you’re in, along with any building or garage-door codes; that’s what tightens a ballpark into a firm price.

  2. 2

    Date booked, access cleared

On our end: Ahead of the day we lock in the moving permit for curb space, reserve the freight-elevator window, and square the certificate of insurance with your management office or condo board, so the truck lands at your door and nobody hauls a dresser half a block.

Where you help: Let us know the earliest you can hand back the old keys and the earliest you can get into the new place, and flag whichever of those two days barely bends.

  3. 3

    Blanket, shrink-wrap, tag, carry

On our end: Every dresser and couch goes under moving blankets and a skin of stretch film, and the hardware off each bed frame or table gets zipped into a marked bag we tape right to the piece it came from.

Where you help: Label your own cartons with the room they belong in at the new place, and keep passports, keys and anything small and valuable in your own car, not on our truck.

  4. 4

    Haul, unload, set it right

On our end: The same hands that filled the truck empty it at the far end — each piece put exactly where you want it, bed frames bolted back together, and every scrap of used wrap and tape carried out with us.

Where you help: Walk the empty rooms with the crew chief before the truck pulls away, while a quick touch-up is still just a quick touch-up.

What should you set aside for a Chicago move?

Give us the size of the place, the date you’ve got in mind, and roughly what’s coming along, and we email back a written estimate that same day. Nothing due up front and no deposit — only a figure you can plan the whole move around.

  • Fully licensed and insured — we hold Illinois Commerce Commission authority on in-state jobs and pick up federal US DOT and MC authority the instant the truck leaves Illinois
  • Whatever number you sign off on is the number the crew is held to — it comes from an actual room-by-room count, never a guess made from the curb
  • Every mover shows up in our uniform, draws a W-2 check from us, and drives a truck the company owns

Sending this costs nothing and ties you to nothing — what you enter goes only to our Southwest Side office, builds your quote alone, and never travels any further. Our Privacy Policy lays out exactly where each detail lives and which staff can pull it up.
